How do you use your computer?

Written by Clive Chung on 2:34 AM

The purpose of this post is to help you categorize how you use a computer, since understanding how you use your computer will help you decide what to focus on. These categories describe different ways that people enjoy using a computer, and almost everyone will fall into multiple categories. The categories are:

  • Internet
  • Multiple users on a single computer or sharing a network
  • Family
  • Personal finances
  • Small Business
  • Multimedia
  • Gamers

Internet Junky
The Internet is a very large network with many uses, including the following:
General Web surfing: The Internet is the largest library in the world. It is a great place to get updated on the latest news and events. If you need to research a paper, turning to the Internet can cut down your research time drastically. The Internet can also help you find out the time a movie is playing, the score of a game, and the latest reviews on that new car that you were thinking about buying. It's all out there.

Shopping
You can buy items without leaving your house by shopping on the Internet; find the book that you are looking for without combing endless shelves. No more fighting for parking spots at the mall or waiting in long check out lines during the holidays. Shopping on the Internet can really save your time.

Banking:
You can access your bank account to find out what your checking account balance is and how you have been spending your money. You can also set up monthly payments so that you never have to forget about mailing the car payment or mortgage.

Email:
Electronic mail has revolutionized the way people communicate and do business. Before computers, you called or sent letters via regular mail to communicate. With email, your message gets delivered instantaneously. The person can reply at their leisure, and their reply will immediately be sent to you. This cuts out painful games of phone tag or waiting for the postman to deliver the mail.

Instant messaging:
As fast as email allowed people to communicate, it just wasn't fast enough. People wanted to be able to communicate with multiple people simultaneously - work and chew gum at the same time. Instant messaging is a service that delivers text messages when you press the enter key, allowing you to chat with someone without ever picking up the phone.

Chat rooms:
Chat rooms are the party lines of the Internet. Many people can go into a single virtual room and type message back and forth. Chat rooms are used to share information, meet people, and just hang out.
